“The Grammar and the Lexicon: Towards Applications in Language Technologies”
In this talk I would like to share my thoughts on the role of the lexicon in the linguistic theories and in Natural Language Processing. First, I will outline the specifics of the lexicalist-based and word-based linguistic theories. Then, I will introduce the Valency Lexicon as the mini-grammar that connects the potential of the words in the Lexicon with the syntactic realizations in the Grammar. Finally, I will present some ideas on how to combine lexicon and grammar knowledge based on the availability of electronic resources like wordnets, morphological dictionaries, text corpora.

Petya Osenova is professor of morphology, syntax and corpus linguistics at the Faculty of Slavic Studies, Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. She is also a senior researcher in the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Language Technologies at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Her scientific interests are mainly in the field of formal and corpus linguistics, the interaction between grammar and lexicon, the creation and application of language resources for the Bulgarian language in monolingual and multilingual settings – mainly corpora and dictionaries. Petya Osenova is member of the ELRA Board, the User Involvement Committee at CLARIN-ERIC and responsible person for Bulgarian Language Resources in the national infrastructure CLaDA-BG, funded by Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and related to the EU infrastructures CLARIN ERIC and DARIAH ERIC.
